Brewers’ Rhys Hoskins Wants ‘Torpedo’ Bat Used by Yankees

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins wants to try the “torpedo” bat, a thicker barrel design that has been used by several high-profile hitters, including Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. The bat, designed by an MIT physicist, is believed to provide a unique advantage for hitters.

Hoskins expressed interest in trying the bat after seeing some players, including Jazz Chisholm Jr., use it during their recent games against the Brewers. However, he noted that getting comfortable with the bat requires more than just physical practice – it’s also about developing a feel for how to hit with it.

“I’ve got to hit with it on the field,” Hoskins said. “You’ve got to feel it out in the cage.” The bat takes some time to break in, which may affect its performance.

Manager Pat Murphy, who has served on advisory boards for several bat companies, believes that players should be free to try new equipment if it shows promise. “It’s not like magical wood,” he said. “It’s just built differently and proven effective.” He added that the secret to hitting is not the bat itself, but rather the player’s skill.

Several Brewers players are open to trying the torpedo bat, including Jake Bauers, who hit a two-run homer with his standard bat on Sunday. Shortstop Joey Ortiz prefers to stick with what he knows, while closer Trevor Megill had expressed concerns about the bats providing an unfair advantage. However, Murphy remains skeptical of such claims, saying that players should be free to try new equipment if it shows merit.
