The UK government has marked the fifth anniversary of its departure from the European Union, saying it has gained freedom from EU regulations. Prime Minister’s spokesperson stated that this move has made the UK a more competitive financial hub.
However, Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, has expressed his desire to “make Brexit work better for the British people” and strengthen relations with Europe.
The Liberal Democrats have criticized the Brexit deal as “an utter disaster for our country,” calling for close ties with the EU. The Conservative party has accused the government of attempting to dismantle Brexit and drag the UK back into the EU’s grasp.
In contrast, Nigel Farage, a key figure behind the Brexit campaign, believes it was a success constitutionally and in terms of foreign policy. However, he admits that many who voted to leave would say it has been “a huge disappointment” due to rising immigration numbers.
The government has taken little fanfare to mark the anniversary, with no official events planned. The spokesperson stated that the UK is working closely with the EU to strengthen its partnership and tackle ongoing security threats.
Sir Keir will host German Chancellor Olaf Scholz before attending a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Monday. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has called for a UK-EU customs union deal, which he believes would “unlock growth” and demonstrate British leadership.
