Brian Wilson, the founder of the Beach Boys, has died at the age of 82 due to respiratory arrest, according to his death certificate. The news was announced by his family on June 11, just weeks before his 83rd birthday.
Wilson’s cause of death is attributed to “respiratory arrest,” which can be caused by decreased respiratory effort leading to a lack of oxygen. Other causes listed include sepsis and cystitis. He also suffered from other associated factors such as neurodegenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure, and chronic kidney disease.
Born on June 20, 1942, Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine in California in 1961. The band achieved significant success with their “California sound” and iconic songs like “California Girls,” “God Only Knows,” “Surfin’ USA,” “Good Vibrations,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
Although Wilson left the Beach Boys in 1964 to pursue a solo career, he was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 1988. His last performance with the Beach Boys was in 2012 for their 50th anniversary.
In recent years, Wilson’s family filed for conservatorship over him due to concerns about his mental health and ability to manage his daily life. However, his family has stated that he remains capable of enjoying his loved ones and continuing to work on projects he chooses.
Wilson is survived by his children and will be deeply missed by fans worldwide.
