The BRICS bloc sharply condemned the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them a “blatant breach of international law”, while supporting the creation of a Palestinian state. The bloc’s declaration issued at a summit in Rio de Janeiro avoided criticism of Russia for its war in Ukraine.
Leaders of the 10-nation bloc expressed “grave concern” about the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, calling on upholding nuclear safeguards and safety. They also denounced the use of starvation as a weapon of war and rejected politicisation or militarisation of humanitarian aid.
The BRICS statement strongly condemned “unilateral coercive measures”, such as economic sanctions, arguing that they violate international law and harm human rights. The bloc warned against protectionist trade policies risk reducing global trade, disrupting supply chains, and heightening economic uncertainty.
In a move aimed at countering US President Donald Trump’s tariffs regime, the BRICS bloc called for increased cooperation with countries seeking to assert their positions without provoking further tensions. However, Trump responded by threatening additional tariffs on countries siding with “anti-American policies”.
