NASA has confirmed that a streaking fireball seen over the Gulf Coast on Saturday night was caused by the reentry of the SUPERVIEW-1 02 Chinese satellite. The satellite burned up in the atmosphere, producing bright streaks of light visible across the sky.
Witnesses from the region took to social media, sharing photos and videos of the phenomenon after it occurred around 10 pm local time on Saturday. Initially, experts considered the possibility of a Ursid meteor shower, which typically peaks in late December. However, further analysis suggests that the bright streaks were likely caused by space debris re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.
