Australian filmmaking brothers RackaRacka have delivered a brutal supernatural horror with their feature debut Bring Her Back. The movie is currently sitting at a certified fresh rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying its place among the most unsettling films of recent years.
Following a found footage-style opening sequence depicting a disturbing occult ritual, the film introduces us to tight-knit step-siblings Piper (Sora Wong) and Andy (Billy Barratt). After their father’s gruesome death, Andy takes on a protective role for his 17-year-old sister, who is mostly blind. However, when child protective services intervenes, Andy must fight to stay by Piper’s side despite their new foster mother, Laura (Sally Hawkins), harboring dark intentions.
Laura’s obsession with Piper stems from her late daughter Cathy’s striking resemblance and the traumatic event that led to Cathy’s death in a pool. As Piper and Andy arrive at Laura’s isolated home, they’re met with a mute and disturbed young boy named Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips). However, as Oliver’s behavior becomes increasingly violent, it’s clear that Laura’s true intentions are far more sinister than simply keeping trouble away from her.
The film hurtles toward its bleak conclusion, revealing Laura’s desperate attempt to resurrect her deceased daughter using an occult ritual. The possessed host must consume the dead and then purge their remains into a person’s mouth, creating a horrific cycle of trauma and grief.
With no reprieve in sight, Bring Her Back delivers nearly 100 minutes of relentless dread, culminating in a chilling conclusion that explores the darkest corners of human anguish.
