Britain Revives ExoMars Rover with £150M Contract

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a £150 million contract to Airbus UK to complete the landing system for the long-delayed ExoMars rover, dubbed Rosalind Franklin after DNA scientist Rosalind Franklin. The rover was originally set to launch in 2022 but was suspended due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The ESA confirmed the rover project’s revival and announced a new launch window between October and December 2028, with an arrival on Mars planned for 2030. The British-built rover will drill two meters into the Martian surface to collect samples for analysis by instruments on board.

Airbus UK will be responsible for developing the landing gear, propulsion system, and other systems that ensure the lander’s stability on touchdown. The lander features two ramps to facilitate a safe entry onto the Martian surface.

The ExoMars rover is expected to provide vital insights into Mars’ history and potential life forms. Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a scientist involved in the project, said that the rover will help answer fundamental questions about the universe, including whether humanity is alone.

The £150 million contract is funded by the UK government through the UK Space Agency, and NASA will provide launch services and some rocket components. Despite technical delays and changes in international relations, the project’s revival brings new hope for a successful mission to Mars.
