British Airways Flight Attendant Sentenced Over Impaired Flight

A 41-year-old British Airways flight attendant, Haden Pentecost, has been sentenced after being found naked and under the influence of drugs during a transatlantic flight. He had admitted to performing an aviation function while impaired and was initially due to serve on a long-haul service in May.

Before the flight, Pentecost told colleagues he had stomach cramps but insisted he was fit for duty. However, during the flight, he became pale, sweaty, and erratic, locking himself inside a lavatory naked and unable to recognize basic facts. The incident left the captain and crew under significant strain, forcing them to continue a 10-hour flight without his professional support.

Pentecost had consumed a large amount of water during the flight, indicating drug-related dehydration, and was later assessed by medical professionals on board before being taken to hospital for further evaluation. A blood test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system.

The judge initially considered a 12-month prison sentence but reduced it to six months due to mitigating factors, including Pentecost’s previous good character and acknowledgment of responsibility. He was also ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £150 in costs.

This incident highlights the importance of strict drug and alcohol policies within the airline industry, which can compromise aviation safety. Another recent incident involving a British Airways cabin crew member has raised similar concerns about the need for effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
