British Fitness Coach Detained in Dubai Over Allegation

A 25-year-old British fitness professional, Antonia Bettridge, is being held in Dubai over an alleged possession of narcotics. Despite having a clean background and no history of involvement with illicit substances, she faces up to life imprisonment and a fine of AED 200,000 if convicted.

Betridge had moved to Dubai in November 2023 to build her future as a personal trainer and real estate agent. Her family describes her as disciplined and committed to healthy living, which seems contradictory to the allegations against her. The situation has been made worse by regional instability and missile activity across parts of the Gulf.

The CEO of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, expressed concerns about how drug allegations are handled in Dubai. She noted that the evidential standards and procedural safeguards differ significantly from those in the UK and that detention can come first with clarity later. The UAE’s zero-tolerance policy for drugs has led to severe penalties, including life imprisonment, even for minor or technical offenses.

Stirling pointed to several cases illustrating how severe and far-reaching UAE drug enforcement can be, highlighting the need for better evidence handling and a more balanced approach to justice. She warned of deeper problems within the enforcement system itself, including corruption and perverse incentives that can lead to unjust outcomes for foreign nationals.
