At 115 years old, Ethel Caterham has become the world’s oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group. The secret to her longevity? Not arguing with anyone.
“I listen and I do what I like,” she said from her nursing home in Surrey, southwest of London. Born on August 21, 1909, in England, Caterham has lived a life full of travel and adventure. She worked as a nanny in India at the age of 18 and later met her husband Norman, whom she married in 1931.
The couple had two daughters and was stationed in Hong Kong and Gibraltar before returning to England. Norman passed away in 1976, but Caterham’s strength and spirit have continued to inspire those around her. Her milestone birthday has been celebrated by the staff at Hallmark Lakeview Luxury Care Home, where she currently resides.
Caterham’s remarkable journey is a testament to her wisdom and dedication to living life to the fullest. She now holds the title of oldest person ever, previously held by French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days.
