Broadcom and TSMC Eye Potential Deals with Intel

Chipmakers Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are separately exploring potential deals to take over parts of Intel, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Broadcom is considering acquiring Intel’s chip-design and marketing business, while seeking a partner for its manufacturing operations. TSMC, on the other hand, is reportedly looking at controlling some or all of Intel’s chip plants as part of an investor consortium.

The discussions between Broadcom and TSMC are preliminary and have not been formally submitted to Intel. TSMC’s interest in acquiring Intel is believed to be encouraged by President Donald Trump’s administration, although a White House official has expressed skepticism about the idea of a foreign entity controlling Intel’s factories.

Intel’s struggling business makes it an attractive target for chip-making rivals. In September, Qualcomm also approached Intel about a potential takeover.
