Assistant coach of the Denver Broncos, Michael Wilhoite, is facing a felony assault charge after being accused of punching a police officer at Denver International Airport. Wilhoite, 38, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and released on a $5,000 bond.
According to a police affidavit, Wilhoite allegedly pulled up to the airport’s drop-off lane, left his vehicle unattended, and bumped into a police officer when he returned. The officer told him to shut up and shoved him back, prompting Wilhoite to punch the officer in the face. The officer used a Taser on Wilhoite as he entered his vehicle to drive away.
The Broncos have issued a statement saying they are aware of the situation and are gathering more information. A judge expressed concern over the incident, stating that “routine, everyday interactions” should not turn violent.
Wilhoite, who previously worked with coach Sean Payton in New Orleans and was a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, joined the Broncos’ coaching staff in 2023. The team set a franchise record last season with 63 sacks.
