A shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon inside Brown University’s Barus and Holley engineering and physics building, leaving at least two students dead and nine others injured. The shooter, described as a male wearing black clothing, opened fire inside the building where students were taking final exams.
According to authorities, one of the victims has been discharged from the hospital, another is in critical but stable condition, and seven others are in stable condition. The Providence Police Department has taken a person of interest into custody, believed to be 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson from Wisconsin.
President Christina Paxson confirmed that Saturday’s shooting took place during a final exam review for a Principles of Economics class. Brown University President Christina Paxson said all nine of the injured victims are students.
The investigation is ongoing, with federal agents analyzing cellphone location data and canvassing for video recordings captured by local businesses and residents. Authorities have not yet been able to notify all the families of the victims due to travel restrictions.
The attack on Brown University is the latest shooting to occur at an American college campus, where many deadly mass killings have taken place in recent years.
