A 48-year-old former Brown student has been found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a storage unit in New Hampshire, police announced on Thursday night. Claudio Manuel Neves Valente was identified as the suspect in the killing of two students at Brown University and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor.
The motive for the attacks remains unclear, but authorities believe that Neves Valente was connected to both crimes. He had attended the same academic program in Portugal as the slain M.I.T. professor and was a former student at Brown University.
Neves Valente entered the United States on a student visa in 2000 and later became a permanent resident in 2017. He rented a car in Boston and drove to Brown University, where he carried out the shooting that killed two students and injured nine others.
The suspect’s body was found in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, shortly after he allegedly shot Dr. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, the M.I.T. professor who was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.
Law enforcement officials say they believe Neves Valente knew Dr. Loureiro, but the nature of their relationship is unclear. The investigation into the motive behind the attacks continues.
The Brown University community has released a statement saying that nothing can bring closure to the lives shattered by last weekend’s gun violence, but now has the opportunity to move forward and begin a path of repair, recovery, and healing.
