The BSE Sensex plummeted 451 points on Monday, primarily due to selling pressure in major stocks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries, amidst weak global market conditions and continued foreign fund outflows. The 30-share index settled at 78,248.13, down by 450.94 points or 0.57% from its opening level.
The NSE Nifty also declined, falling 168.50 points or 0.71% to close at 23,644.90. Tata Motors registered the steepest decline of 2.24%, followed by Titan, Tata Steel, and HDFC Bank.
Despite this downturn, healthcare, IT, and telecommunication sectors showed positive performance. Market breadth remained negative, with 2,636 stocks declining and only 1,487 advancing on the BSE.
Foreign investors sold equities worth Rs 1,323.29 crore on Friday, contributing to the market’s decline. Asian markets showed mixed results, while European markets traded lower following negative closing in US markets on Friday.
