Bucks to Waive Damian Lillard, Sign Myles Turner to 4-Year Deal

The Milwaukee Bucks will release guard Damian Lillard as part of a move to free up cap space and sign center Myles Turner to a four-year, $107 million contract. Lillard’s Achilles tendon injury is expected to keep him out for most of next season.

General manager Jon Horst has been aggressive in his pursuit of big moves, including acquiring a replacement for center Brook Lopez. The move brings talent to the team and allows them to compete for a top playoff seed in the East.

Turner, 29, can replicate what Lopez did for the Bucks during their seven-season run. He’s a three-point shooter and defender who will pair well with Giannis Antetokounmpo. The signing also marks a significant departure from the team’s struggles against the Pacers in the playoffs.

To make room for Turner, the Bucks plan to waive Lillard, sign Taurean Prince, Gary Trent Jr., and Kevin Porter Jr. They now have $19.6 million in cap space, which should increase by the time they sign Turner.

Lillard is said to be thrilled with this move, as it allows him to join a contending team without financial constraints. He’ll receive calls from several teams but may wait until next summer to reassess his situation. This move gives Lillard a level of freedom not often seen in professional sports.
