Buena Vista Social Club Brings Havana’s Musical Magic to Broadway

A new musical inspired by the hit album “Buena Vista Social Club” has finally arrived on Broadway. Directed by Saheem Ali, this show brings the spirit of Cuban music and its performers to the stage. The production features a talented cast, including Isa Antonetti as 19-year-old Omara Portuondo, who sings with her sister Haydee in 1956.

The musical takes place in two main settings: 1956, just before the Batista regime falls, and 1996, when young producer Juan de Marcos brings together a band of veteran performers. The show’s greatest achievement is its ability to evoke the power of music as a communal experience that binds people.

Throughout the production, the audience is transported to different Havana clubs and recording studios, where they can see the musicians in action. While some scenes have clunky dialogue, the choreographers Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck make the most of their space, creating vibrant and engaging performances.

The cast delivers standout performances, particularly Natalie Venetia Belcon as older Omara, who excels at delivering witty one-liners. The book by Marco Ramirez is inspired by real events but takes some creative liberties to create more emotional links between the characters.

One of the highlights of the show is its music. Many classic Cuban songs are featured, along with original compositions that showcase the talents of the performers. Renesito Avich shines as Eliades Ochoa, introducing his “tres” playing skills with flair.

Overall, “Buena Vista Social Club” brings a lively and engaging musical experience to Broadway, celebrating the beauty of Cuban music and its rich cultural heritage.
