Bungie CEO Pete Parsons has announced his retirement, citing a desire for a “new beginning” as he passes the torch to new leader Justin Truman. The departure comes as pressure mounts on the studio due to declining sentiment around Destiny 2 and financial concerns.
Parsons had been at Bungie since 2003, rising through the ranks to become CEO in 2016. However, his time at the helm has been marked by significant layoffs and allegations of excessive spending on personal items, including a reported $2.4 million vintage car collection.
Truman, who will assume Parsons’ role as Studio Head, previously served as chief development officer and is credited with bringing memorable moments to Bungie’s history. He also warned against the dangers of “over-delivery” in live service games during a 2023 GDC talk.
The new leadership faces significant challenges, including the ongoing struggles of Destiny 2 and Marathon, which was recently delayed without a release date set. The studio has been criticized for its handling of both franchises, with fans expressing frustration over declining quality and lack of direction.
Truman’s appointment marks a new chapter in Bungie’s history as it navigates the complexities of Sony’s acquisition and integration into the gaming giant’s operations.
