Bungie Unveils Team-Based Extraction Shooter ‘Marathon’

Bungie, known for its work on Destiny and Halo, has finally revealed the gameplay of its upcoming Marathon project. The new iteration is a significant departure from the original games but retains some connected elements of lore.

The game is built as a team-based extraction shooter with both PvP and PvE elements. Players take on the role of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who explore and retrieve equipment from an abandoned colony on Tau Ceti IV. The game features a bright and neon aesthetic, which marks a notable departure from Bungie’s recent work.

Each Runner has a name and personality, allowing players to choose a playstyle that suits them. Matches can include up to 18 players in crews of three or go solo, with a time limit for extraction. Players must scavenge for equipment while fending off robots and enemy players, adding tactical complexity to the gameplay.

Bungie also showcased an animated short by director Alberto Mielgo, which provides insight into the game’s tone and atmosphere. The film features elements of body-horror and existential angst, suggesting a disquieting vibe about humanity’s future.

Marathon is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam) on September 23. Bungie has invited players to join the Marathon Community Discord for early playtests and direct interaction with the development team.
