Bus Crash Kills at Least 38 in Brazil’s Minas Gerais State

A devastating bus crash on a major highway in southeastern Brazil’s Minas Gerais state has claimed the lives of at least 38 people, with another 13 injured. The coach was carrying 45 passengers from Sao Paulo and burst into flames after the crash.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described the incident as “terrible” and offered his condolences to the families affected. The bus driver was among those killed.

Eyewitnesses reported that the crash may have been caused by a blown tyre or a granite block hitting the bus, which was headed to the state of Bahia.

The government has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with Governor Romeu Zema ordering “full mobilisation” of the government to assist the victims. This is one of several fatal traffic accidents in Brazil this year, which has seen over 10,000 deaths on the roads so far.
