US companies are striking back at President Donald Trump’s tariffs by adding new surcharges to their online orders and products. The move comes as the US and China engage in a trade war, with reciprocal tariffs affecting dozens of nations.
Several businesses have introduced tariff surcharges, including Jolie, a New York-based skincare brand, which is charging a “Trump liberation tariff” fee on all orders starting next week. Dame, a sexual wellness brand, has added a $5 “Trump tariff surcharge” to its vibrators imported from China.
The fees are being implemented as the US and China continue their tit-for-tat trade war. Effective tariffs on Chinese imports have risen to 145%, while the US has slapped the country with 125% levies. The White House recently announced a three-month pause for reciprocal tariffs, but many companies remain vulnerable to price hikes.
Other businesses are taking advantage of the uncertainty by running limited-time sales and promotions. Burlap & Barrel, a spice importer, is offering a 20% discount on its products, citing the unpredictable nature of trade policies. Freewrite, a digital typewriter manufacturer, has warned customers that prices will rise due to the tariffs.
The moves are seen as a way for companies to signal their discontent with Trump’s trade policies and protect themselves from price hikes. Experts say consumers will likely react strongly to sales promotions in uncertain market conditions.
