A new study has found that swapping butter for certain plant-based oils can help reduce the risk of death, contradicting a growing trend on social media that promotes animal fats over seed oils.
The research, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed 33 years of dietary data from over 221,000 participants and found that higher consumption of plant-based oils was associated with a 16% reduction in total mortality. In contrast, higher butter intake was linked to a 15% higher risk of mortality.
Dr. Walter Willett, coauthor of the study, said that while some people may argue that butter is a healthy fat, there is no good evidence to support this claim. “Seventeen percent is quite a big change, especially when you look at long-term health benefits,” he said.
The study suggests that choosing plant oils over butter depends on available options and considering the nutritional value of each oil. For example, Willett recommends olive, canola, and soybean oils as better choices due to their high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.
It’s also essential to note that a balance of nutrients is necessary for optimal health. While some seed oils like corn and sunflower contain higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids, which are necessary for maintaining good health, they should not be relied upon as the sole source of plant oil due to their limited omega-3 content.
Experts emphasize the importance of using oils in moderation, regardless of their nutritional value. “All oils provide about 120 calories per tablespoon, so it’s best to vary your food intake and use them sparingly,” said Dr. Sandee LaMotte, CNN contributor.
