Buzzy Horror Director Lee Cronin to Helm New Mummy Film

Emerging horror director Lee Cronin, known for his work on Evil Dead Rise, is set to write and direct a new film in the horror subgenre, The Mummy. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse will co-finance and produce the movie alongside Cronin’s production company Doppelgängers, with release dates set for April 17, 2026.

The plot details remain under wraps, but the project boasts an impressive lineup of producers, including James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville. Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the film at Atomic Monster, while Blumhouse has corroborated The Hollywood Reporter’s initial report on the new Mummy movie.

The horror subgenre has a rich history, dating back to the 1930s with Universal Pictures’ iconic film The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff as the legendary Imhotep. Since then, various adaptations have been released, including successful blockbusters featuring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. However, the most recent outing, starring Tom Cruise, received mixed reviews.

Cronin’s involvement marks his latest foray into the horror genre, following his critically acclaimed work on Evil Dead Rise, which grossed over $147 million worldwide. He previously attached to Thaw, a separate horror thriller also in development at New Line, but its status remains unclear.

While some speculate about the possibility of a fourth installment featuring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, others question whether this is necessary, especially given the mixed reception of the most recent film starring Tom Cruise. Nevertheless, Cronin’s involvement promises an exciting new take on the classic horror subgenre.
