Chinese automaker BYD claims to have developed technology that can charge electric vehicle batteries in as little as 5 minutes at 1,000 kilowatts, providing up to 250 miles of driving range. This breakthrough could alleviate the concern of “range anxiety” among potential buyers, who need to plan their trips based on available charging locations.
The new charging infrastructure will initially be deployed in China and integrated into two new vehicles: a sedan and an SUV. BYD did not specify when these vehicles or the charging network would become available.
Fast charging could also lead to increased demand for existing EV charging stations, reducing wait times for owners. Industry expert Ryan Rohrman believes this technology could significantly boost EV adoption, but noted that ensuring sufficient charging infrastructure is a crucial next step.
