Brazilian authorities have halted construction on a factory owned by Chinese electric vehicle company BYD due to inhumane working conditions for 163 Chinese workers. The investigation found that workers were subjected to “slavery-like” conditions, including excessive labor hours, degrading accommodation, and lack of basic amenities such as toilets and refrigeration. More than 100 workers had their passports withheld, while over 600 shared portable toilets with unsanitary conditions. BYD has terminated the contract with the contractor and is reviewing its employment practices to ensure compliance with Brazilian laws.
