Chinese auto conglomerate BYD has introduced a new 1,000-volt electric vehicle (EV) platform that can enable charging rates as fast as five minutes. This is twice the current industry standard and could potentially triple it.
The “Super E-Platform” promises 1,000 kW charge speeds, which is faster than most gas stations and even some fast chargers on the market. Most EV models currently available cannot even reach 350 kW charging rates. BYD aims to change this with its new platform, which has been officially unveiled for global mass production.
During a livestream event in Shenzen, China, BYD showcased the capabilities of its new technology. The platform can charge vehicles up to 400km (249 miles) of range in just five minutes. This is possible due to its high voltage and large current capabilities.
To support future models that utilize this technology, BYD plans to implement over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China. However, the exact timeline for the rollout remains unknown.
The introduction of the Super E-Platform marks a significant milestone in the EV industry. It could pave the way for faster charging times and more widespread adoption of electric vehicles. With this technology, BYD has proven that it is possible to deliver charging speeds comparable to gas stations, providing one less argument against EVs from naysayers.
