BYD has introduced a new electric vehicle platform capable of reaching charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts, surpassing Tesla’s latest 500 kW superchargers by twice the capacity. This breakthrough promises to significantly reduce charging time, allowing cars to travel 400 kilometers after just a five-minute charge.
The “super e-platform” is set to address a major concern among EV buyers, aiming to lower charging time to levels comparable to gasoline filling. The Han L sedan and Tang L SUV will be the first to adopt this technology, priced starting at 270,000 yuan ($37,328.91).
BYD aims to deploy 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China by 2025, with projections of 56 million sales and 4.2 million cars delivered in 2024. This move is part of the company’s effort to improve EV acceptance, as competition for charging infrastructure continues to rise.
The introduction of this platform comes at a time when Chinese automakers are investing heavily in charging infrastructure. BYD owners will no longer have to rely on outside charging stations, and Tesla has set up superchargers in China since 2014, establishing an early presence in the market.
