BYU Advances to Sweet 16 Under Coach Kevin Young

BYU’s men’s basketball team has reached the Sweet 16 under first-year head coach Kevin Young, led by First Team All-Big 12 performer Richie Saunders and a team that has shown remarkable depth. The Cougars defeated Wisconsin 91-89 in their NCAA Tournament matchup on Saturday night at Ball Arena in Denver.

Young addressed his team after the win, firing them up with a passionate speech. “I’ve told you guys time and time again,” he said. “This time of year, you can’t make stuff up. You rely on the stuff you’ve been doing all year long. And that’s why we’re in this position. Let’s go!”

BYU will now face the winner of the Saint Mary’s-Alabama matchup in Newark, New Jersey. The Cougars have won 11 of their last 12 games and boast a 26-9 record this season, with Young earning the most wins by a first-year head coach in BYU basketball history.

This marks just the third time since seeding began that BYU has reached the regional semifinals, with previous occurrences dating back to 1981 and 2011. The team’s resilience and teamwork have led them to new heights after a 14-year drought.
