BYU Football Spring Camp Observations

BYU football players put in a strong display during the final week of spring camp, with the defense standing out as the team’s most impressive unit. Projected starting cornerback Mory Bamba made several key plays, including breaking up a pass and tackling Tei Nacua in space.

The depth on the defensive side is better than ever, according to coach Kalani Sitake. The team ran a drill that simulated a real game situation, with the defense stifling the offense’s attempts to gain yards. Sophomore cornerback Jonathan Kabeya also made a notable play, breaking up a back-shoulder pass.

On the other side of the ball, tight end Carsen Ryan is looking poised for a major role in the 2025 season. He’s receiving more targets than any BYU tight end last fall and has become a key part of Jake Retzlaff’s connection with his receivers.

True freshman Andrew Williams has also impressed, earning first-team reps at offensive tackle despite being just a true freshman. His speed and agility make him an attractive prospect for the future, but he won’t be needed in 2025 unless injuries force him into action.

Other players climbing the depth chart include Texas transfer Tausili Akana and Joshua Singh, who both got first-team reps on Monday. Siale Esera is also returning from injury and could become a key player when healthy.

The wide receiver position is deep and talented, with Chase Roberts, Keelan Marion, and Tei Nacua among the top six projected starters. However, recruits like Dom McKenzie and LaMason Waller are threatening to disrupt this depth chart, while Cal transfer Marquis Taluilu could become a luxury piece at wide receiver.

Big-name recruits were in attendance for BYU’s practice on Monday, including five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons and athletes Jaron and Kennan Pula.
