Cabot Creamery has issued a Class III recall of over 1,700 pounds of butter due to potential contamination with coliform bacteria, a type found in fecal matter. The recall affects 189 cases of their premium sea salt butter sold in eight states.
The affected butter was distributed between March 26 and the date it reached its best-by mark of September 9. Consumers are advised not to consume or use this butter, identified as lot 090925-055, item 2038.
Agri-Mark officials reported that they recovered 99.5% of potentially contaminated product before sale, with 17 packages sold in Vermont. Coliform bacteria can be present in the environment and animal feces but are unlikely to cause illness. The company has taken internal actions to address the issue.
Consumers should check their butter supplies for this lot number and discard any affected products if found.
