CAFOD Provides Aid Amid DRC Crisis as Bishops Push for Dialogue

The Catholic Church has launched a humanitarian effort in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) amidst an escalating crisis that has claimed over 3,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands. CAFOD, in partnership with Caritas Goma and the Anglican Church, is providing emergency aid, including food and non-food items.

Bernard Balibuno, CAFOD’s Country Director in the DRC, described the situation as “dire” due to the destruction of camps housing over 400,000 displaced people. With many families forced to flee their homes, the lack of proper shelter is becoming increasingly dire during the rainy season.

Medical facilities are severely strained, with hospitals overwhelmed by wounded civilians and essential medical supplies in short supply. The risk of disease outbreaks, including cholera, also looms large. Despite these challenges, CAFOD’s efforts continue to reach those in need, thanks to emergency funding from CAFOD England.

Beyond humanitarian aid, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference is calling for peace and initiating dialogue between parties. Their efforts aim to amplify Pope Francis’ appeals for an end to violence and have led to consultations between the government and rebel groups.

However, Balibuno stressed that the international community’s attention has been overshadowed by other conflicts, resulting in a “forgotten crisis.” He warned of a looming food crisis if action is not taken quickly, emphasizing the need for prayers, support, and awareness to address the humanitarian situation.
