California Attorney General Rob Bonta has vowed to sue Apple if the company is subject to a 25% tariff for manufacturing iPhones in the US, as demanded by President Trump. In a press conference on Friday, Bonta stated that his office would assess its potential role and monitor Trump’s actions, ensuring they take “appropriate action” if the law is broken.
Bonta criticized Trump’s statement, calling it “disappointing” and likening the president’s remarks to telling Apple CEO Tim Cook what to do. The AG emphasized that he will protect California companies’ rights, particularly those of big tech firms like Apple, which contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
Trump also threatened to impose tariffs on other companies that manufacture similar products in non-US locations. Bonta’s office will examine the legal basis for any tariff action and determine if it targets a single company or applies more broadly. With Apple’s stock down 3% last week, the company has yet to comment on the threat.
