California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law banning new sales of semi-automatic handguns, including popular brands like Glock, due to their design flaw that allows for easy modification into fully automatic weapons. The law, Assembly Bill 1127, targets handguns manufactured by Glock and other companies with similar designs.
Critics argue that the law is unconstitutional and plan to challenge it in court. However, supporters of the bill believe that manufacturers have failed to address the design issue and that the law will protect communities from mass shootings.
The law takes effect on January 1, allowing dealers to sell pre-existing Glock-style handguns, but prohibiting them from selling new ones. Private party sales are also exempted. Second Amendment groups, including the Firearms Policy Coalition, plan to challenge the law in federal court, citing that it infringes upon their rights as a free people.
The move comes amid growing concerns about gun safety and mass shootings. While some argue that the ban is an overreach of government power, supporters see it as a necessary measure to protect public safety.
As the bill’s author said, “We refuse to stand idly by while our schools and communities are being threatened by illegal machine guns.” The law aims to hold gun manufacturers accountable for their designs and ensure that they are not turning a profit from weapons that can be easily modified into fully automatic machines.
