A new law signed by Governor Newsom allows prosecutors in four California counties to request gun restraining orders, also known as “Red Flag Laws”. This pilot program will authorize Ventura, El Dorado, Alameda, and Santa Clara county prosecutors to petition courts for these orders. The goal is to prevent gun violence.
Under the law, prosecutors can seek a 21-day order, which can be renewed if the person still poses a danger. The data gathered from this pilot program will help inform future policy decisions. This move aims to address mass shootings by removing firearms from people who pose a risk.
