A group of US representatives from southern California visited a detention facility in Adelanto, where people arrested in immigration raids are being held. The lawmakers reported deteriorating conditions, including a lack of access to clean clothes and towels, and unhygienic bathrooms.
Detainees told the congress members that they had not received a change of clothes for 10 days and were forced to reuse the same towel repeatedly. Some detainees also expressed difficulties in calling their family members and lawyers due to poor communication services.
Lawmakers from San Gabriel Valley, including Judy Chu, joined families of people arrested in workplace raids at a press conference outside the facility. They shared stories of traumatic experiences, including watching loved ones being taken away by immigration officers.
The US representatives were unable to get answers on how many detainees had been arrested in recent LA raids. However, they reported seeing individuals from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, asylum seekers, and people who had been detained at immigration court.
As southern California continues to face widespread protests against Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, the US Department of Justice has brought federal cases against demonstrators, raising concerns about free speech. The Los Angeles district attorney is also prosecuting individuals connected to the protests with charges ranging from assault to vandalism.
