California Raw Milk Producer Halts Sales Due to Bird Flu Outbreak

California’s largest raw milk producer, Fresno County’s Raw Farm, has stopped selling its dairy products after detecting the bird flu virus among its cows. The virus has affected nearly half of the state’s 1,100 dairy operators and can cause lethargy and reduced milk production in infected cows.

Founder Mark McAfee said his dairy is under quarantine, prohibiting him from moving cattle off the property or selling raw milk products. However, he can still sell cheese made before the quarantine began on Thanksgiving day.

The recall includes a shipment of “cream top” whole milk products with an expiration date of December 7. No illnesses have been linked to Raw Farm’s milk.

This halt in sales comes at a critical time for McAfee, who was experiencing record sales despite warnings from state and federal health officials about the dangers of raw milk consumption.
