California has suspended the sale of raw milk products from Raw Farm LLC due to multiple detections of bird flu virus in the company’s milk supply. The state health department has advised consumers not to consume the products, which include raw whole milk, cream, kefir, butter, and cheese.
Raw Farm is voluntarily recalling all its products produced after November 27, and the farm has been placed under quarantine. Officials believe that raw milk can be infectious to humans and have found high levels of bird flu virus in the product.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously warned about the dangers of drinking raw milk, which does not undergo pasteurization to kill harmful bacteria. Raw milk can carry pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, causing foodborne illnesses.
Pasteurized milk remains safe to drink, according to health officials. No human bird flu cases associated with Raw Farm’s products have been confirmed, but the risk is believed to be present.
