California Track Championship Divided by Trans Athlete Controversy

A California high school track meet is set to become a battleground in a contentious debate over trans athletes competing in women’s categories. President Donald Trump’s intervention has sparked a heated reaction from the Golden State, with Governor Gavin Newsom backing the CIF’s decision to adjust its eligibility policy.

The CIF announced a slight rule change allowing biologically female athletes who narrowly missed qualifying behind a trans-identifying athlete to compete for the state title this weekend. La Canada High School star Katie McGuinness will be among those competing after automatically qualifying last weekend.

However, the McGuinness family is unsatisfied with the change and has expressed concerns over fairness and safety in women’s sports. They claim that biological males have genetic advantages that make it unfair to compete against them.

The CIF is already under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for Title IX compliance. Trans athletes have been allowed to compete as women since 2014, but this move seems to be a response to Trump’s executive order on No Men’s in Women’s Sports.

Newsom has expressed sympathy for the concerns, stating that it’s an issue of fairness and recognizing the potential impact on vulnerable communities.
