California Valley Fever Cases Spike 100% Year Over Year

Valley fever cases have risen statewide in California, with some areas experiencing a staggering 100% year-over-year increase, according to data from the California Department of Public Health. The disease, caused by inhaling fungal spores found in soil, can lead to symptoms like cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, even in severe cases.

Most Valley fever cases originate in central regions, but outbreaks have also been reported in areas like Northern Central Valley and Southern California. The largest year-over-year increase was seen in Monterey County, where cases jumped from 96 to 299, a 200% rise.

Kern County has the highest number of cases, with over 3,700 logged, making up nearly one-third of all state cases. Farmworkers are at increased risk due to their exposure to dirt and dust. The CDPH recommends precautions such as closing doors and windows when windy or dusty, wetting down soil before digging, and wearing N95 masks outdoors.

Recently, at least 19 people who attended the Lightning in a Bottle music festival tested positive for Valley fever, with eight hospitalizations reported. To protect themselves, those at risk should take these precautions to minimize their exposure to the fungal spores that cause Valley fever.
