California Warns of Possible Summer Surge from New COVID-19 Variant

A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading rapidly across California, with health experts warning of a possible summer surge in cases. The state’s Department of Public Health has reported an increase in cases since May 1, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified over 500 cases across 22 countries.

The variant carries six mutations that can enhance its ability to spread. According to the California Department of Public Health, it now accounts for 19% of COVID-19 cases in the state, up from just 2% in April.

While symptoms of NB.1.8.1 are similar to those of other COVID-19 variants, health experts stress that staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccination can reduce the risk of disease and severe cases.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine was released in fall 2024, and individuals aged 6 months and older are eligible for booster shots. Californians should contact their healthcare provider for specific vaccination recommendations.

As summer approaches, experts warn that travel and indoor gatherings can increase the spread of COVID-19. Understanding why these summer surges happen can help protect against infection and severe disease.
