California Wildfires: Family of 17 Grateful Despite Losing Homes

A family of 17 in Altadena, California, has lost four homes due to the devastating Los Angeles County wildfires, but despite the tragedy, they are grateful to be alive. The Williams family has called Altadena home for over 50 years and is still reeling from the loss.

The fires, fueled by drought conditions and strong winds, have burned tens of thousands of acres and left at least 27 people dead. The family’s four homes were among those lost entirely, leaving only the front door of Matilda Williams’ home standing.

“We are so blessed,” said Matilda Williams, who described the experience as “upside down.” Her husband’s alert went off on their phone around 3:30 am, warning them to evacuate immediately. The family has since found shelter in a hotel and is receiving support from various organizations and individuals.

The outpouring of generosity from strangers has been overwhelming for the Williams family. They have received donations totaling over $100,000, including $65,000 from “Good Morning America” and gifts from 84 Lumber, DoorDash, and Thrive Market.

“It’s a blessing that we’ve been able to all stay together through this,” said Krystal Williams, who praised the generosity of those helping their family. The Williams family plans to rebuild their lives despite the long road ahead.

Their experience serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope and the kindness of strangers can make all the difference.
