Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has made a significant change in response to player feedback, ditching the unnecessary cosmetics that plagued its predecessor, Black Ops 6. The game’s developers have acknowledged that modern installments had become “Fortnite-ified” and lost touch with their unique identity.
The decision comes after Battlefield 6 demonstrated a more grounded approach to cosmetics, which sparked debate about the strengths and weaknesses of the two FPS franchises. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will no longer carry forward operators, operator skins, and weapons from Black Ops 6, but double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still be carried over.
According to a community update blog post, the developers are committed to delivering an authentic experience that feels like a “spiritual successor to Black Ops 2.” They will focus on crafting bundles and items that fit the Black Ops identity, aiming for a better balance towards the immersive core Call of Duty experience.
Treyarch, the developer behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, has promised more updates in the coming weeks, including new map and weapon information, refined movement updates, Zombies details, and a progression breakdown. The game’s ambitious co-op adventure is expected to redefine what campaign can be in Call of Duty.
