Cameron Smith Ties for Lead After Blustery First Round

The first round of LIV Golf AndalucĂa concluded with severe winds forcing a suspension of play, leaving three players tied for the lead. Ripper GC Captain Cameron Smith shot 2-under 71 to tie with Smash GC’s Talor Gooch and Majesticks GC Co-Captain Lee Westwood. The Australian golfer, known for his experience playing in blustery conditions, said the wind made it “brutal” on the course.

The suspension occurred at 5:07 p.m. local time due to unplayable conditions, including high-impact wind gusts and dry putting surfaces that prevented putts from stopping. Play will resume Saturday at 8 a.m. local time with the second round expected to start at 10:30 a.m.

The leaders, Smith, Gooch, and Westwood, share an overnight lead of 1 under. Smash GC’s Talor Gooch, who won LIV Golf AndalucĂa in 2023, endured a rollercoaster seven-hole stretch that included three birdies and three bogeys. Majesticks GC Co-Captain Lee Westwood finished the day with four consecutive pars after leading early.

Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau and Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm are one stroke back, tied for first place on the team leaderboard at 5 over. The Crushers, seeking their fourth consecutive team title, are in a three-way tie for the lead alongside Legion XIII and Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC.

The new scoring format this season now involves all four scores counting in every round in the team competition. The field scoring average when play was suspended Friday was 74.05 or +3.05 strokes over par.
