As a full-time Florida resident, I’ve long advocated for fewer Canadian visitors during winter months. But now, thanks to President Trump’s threats and talk of annexing Canada as the 51st state, many Canadians are boycotting US travel.
Trump has been critical of Canada, claiming they’re “ripping off” the US by taking in billions of dollars each year. However, he’s also targeted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him “governor.” This is not the first time Trump has attacked Trudeau, and many Canadians are now lashing out at US travelers.
While this boycott might be a negative hit for US tourism, it could have benefits for Floridians. With fewer Canadian visitors, we’ll avoid overcrowding during peak season. Additionally, the economic downturn caused by the boycott will likely affect New Yorkers more than us.
On a lighter note, Canadians can look forward to avoiding red tide on Florida’s West Coast and missing out on the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring training games in Dunedin. However, they’ll soon have their baseball fix back when the team returns to Toronto for opening day against the Baltimore Orioles.
It’s unclear how long this boycott will last, but with Trump’s presidency likely coming to an end soon, Canadians can expect a return to normal relations between our countries. Until then, I wish them all the best and invite them to bring some eggs back to Florida when they come back.
