A Canadian couple who typically spends $30,000 a year on vacations to the US has canceled their plans due to President Donald Trump’s insults and tariffs towards their country. Gary Cruise and his wife Carol told CNN they are “furious” and “horribly insulted” by Trump’s comments.
The couple had planned to visit Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California, but scrapped the trips after Trump’s tariffs were imposed. They now plan to drive their RV back to Canada instead of flying.
Canada-US trade relations have been strained since Trump announced plans to make Canada the “51st state.” The US has also implemented various tariffs on Canadian goods, which has led to a decline in Canadian tourists visiting the US.
Data from Statistics Canada shows that return trips by Canadians via car from the US dropped 23% in February compared to the previous year. Return trips by air travel were down 2.4%. Despite this, Canadians still visited the US 20.4 million times last year and generated $20.5 billion in spending.
The couple is not alone in canceling their US vacation plans due to Trump’s actions. Canadian airline and travel companies have reported a decline in interest from Canadian tourists. The US Travel Association estimates that a 10% drop in travel would result in $2.1 billion of lost spending.
