Canada Eyes EU Membership Amid Trump’s US Plans

Canada appears to be prioritizing EU membership over becoming the 51st US state, with 46% of Canadians in favor of joining the bloc. In contrast, only 10% of Canadians support Donald Trump’s secession plans.

A new poll shows that almost every other Canadian (29%) is against joining the US, while 25% are undecided. The EU seems to be more attractive to Canadians than the US, with 45% of Brits in favor of rejoining the bloc as a comparable measure.

EU Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho welcomed the poll results, saying they show Canada’s appreciation for the EU’s values. However, she did not rule out Canada’s European prospects, citing treaties that require a country to respect European values and meet specific criteria.

The EU treaties do not specify what constitutes a European state, leaving it up to the Commission and member states to draw the line. In the past, countries like Turkey and Cyprus have been allowed to join despite being partially located outside continental Europe. However, Morocco’s 1987 application was rejected due to its geographical location.
