Canada is spearheading a growing travel boycott of President Donald Trump’s America, with Canadian residents returning by vehicle from the U.S. dropping 32% in March compared to the previous year.
The decline follows Mr. Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and his repeated attacks on Canadian sovereignty. This trend is not unique to Canada, as Delta Air Lines has scrapped its financial forecast for the year, blaming a “largely stalled” travel industry.
International arrivals at major U.S. airports have plummeted by 10-15% compared to last year, according to passenger numbers published by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The drop reflects anger over Mr. Trump’s trade war and fears about being detained at the border.
The travel boycott is expected to severely impact America’s massive tourism industry, with Canadians spending $30 billion on travel in the U.S. in 2023 alone. A 10% drop in this spending would lead to 14,000 job losses in the travel sector, warned the U.S. Travel Association earlier this year.
