Canada Supports Ukraine Security Guarantees Amid Ongoing Conflict

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed support for Ukraine’s calls for security guarantees as part of any peace deal with Russia. During a visit to Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, Carney said a group of Western allies is working with the US to bolster Ukrainian defenses.

Carney stated that it is not realistic for Ukraine’s armed forces to be the only source of security, and suggested that troops from allied countries may be deployed to protect Ukraine. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy signed an agreement with Carney on drone co-production, and the Canadian prime minister announced additional military aid worth over $1 billion for Ukraine. However, hopes for a ceasefire remain dim as Kyiv and Moscow continue to exchange fire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ruled out any immediate meeting between himself and Zelenskyy, despite Trump’s efforts to broker a summit. The Russian Foreign Minister accused European leaders of undermining efforts to reach a diplomatic solution, claiming they do not want peace in Ukraine.
