Canada is planning to stop selling American beer and liquor in its stores due to President Donald Trump’s planned tariffs, which would impose 25% taxes on Mexican and most Canadian imports. The move is part of a retaliatory measure against the US, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warning that it will have “real consequences” for American consumers.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that officials at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) would remove American alcohol from store shelves starting Tuesday. British Columbia Premier David Eby also plans to stop buying American liquor from red states, targeting Republican-leaning provinces.
Major bourbon distillers in Kentucky are expected to be directly impacted by the tariffs, with U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey warning that it will “devastate” the state’s signature bourbon industry. The move could lead to job losses and harm the US economy.
Canada has imposed 25% tariffs on over $155 billion worth of US goods, including lumber, appliances, groceries, and alcohol. The Canadian government is urging citizens to boycott US-made products, with one MP even promising to drink only “freedom wines” from Canada, France, or Spain.
