Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime to win its fourth consecutive best-on-best international hockey tournament at TD Garden in Boston. Connor McDavid scored the winning goal at 8:18 into the extra period, giving Canada its second victory over the U.S. in two days.
The gold medal is Canada’s sixth in seven tournaments since 2010. Nathan MacKinnon led all players with four goals and was named tournament MVP. Mitch Marner had two assists in the victory, while Jordan Binnington made 31 saves for Canada, including six in overtime.
Canada’s coach Jon Cooper credited the team’s success to its pride and dedication to representing their country. “This one was different,” Cooper said. “This wasn’t a win for themselves. This was a win for 40-plus million people, and the guys knew it, and they delivered.”
The U.S., on the other hand, still hasn’t won a best-on-best tournament since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. The team’s loss drops its overall record in these tournaments to 0-3.
For Canada, the victory is a testament to its consistency and determination. “We’ve got to go do it again next February,” said MacKinnon, who was awarded MVP honors for his outstanding performance.
